Congratulations to Debra Valle, the first reader to give us the correct location for Friday's "Where in the Valley?" photo.
State of play: The monument to the Lost Dutchman is in Apache Junction, overlooking the Superstition Mountains.
The Dons Club of Phoenix erected the monument in February 1938 "to commemorate the legend of the Lost Dutchman Mine," per the plaque on the front.
Flashback: Legend has it the Peralta family of northern Mexico struck gold in the Superstitions in the 1840s, but had their fortunes cut short by an Apache ambush that killed all but two family members.
German immigrant Jacob Waltz, widely known as "the Dutchman," is said to have found the mine in the 1870s and stashed the Peraltas' gold in the Superstitions.
A neighbor named Julia Thomas, who cared for Waltz prior to his 1891 death in Phoenix, claimed he'd told her where to find the gold.
Thomas was unable to locate the mine, but her tale inspired countless others to search.
What's next: You can celebrate the legend this weekend at the 62nd annual Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo in Apache Junction, which runs Friday-Sunday.
You can also enjoy a carnival, Friday night dance and Saturday morning parade.
And don't miss the beer and bratwurst party Thursday.
