Conservation groups sue over parks exhibit removals

Flashback: President Trump signed an executive order titled "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History" in March, requiring the Interior Department to remove any content that "inappropriately [disparages] Americans past or living" and to instead focus on "the greatness of the achievements and progress of the American people."

State of play: Democracy Forward filed the lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in Massachusetts on behalf of the National Parks Conservation Association, the American Association for State and Local History, and several others.

• The organizations are asking the court to restore exhibits and literature that were axed under the executive order.

Zoom in: Arizona exhibits that have been removed or flagged for future removal, according to Democracy Forward, include:

• A sign describing basalt bubbles at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument that included an image of a visitor holding a pride flag.

• Descriptions of destructive grazing practices, climate change and endangered animals at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.
• A panel at the Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site that discussed Navajo leader Ganado Mucho.

The other side: An unnamed Interior Department spokesperson said in a statement to Axios that Democracy Forward is "funded and run by far-left extremists" and that the changes to interpretive content "ensure parks tell the full and accurate story of American history."
