35 undocumented immigrants arrested in Zipps Sports Grill operation

• Phoenix has been bracing for an escalation in immigration enforcement since an early January story in the Bulwark reported that DHS planned to focus on the city.

Friction Point: The U.S. Attorney's Office said in a press release on Monday that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Arizona agents were executing search warrants and Lennea Montandon, a spokesperson for the office, emphasized to Axios on Monday that the operation was not an ICE sweep.

• Yes, but: Wednesday's DHS statement was attributed to an ICE spokesperson and noted that both HSI (ICE's investigative arm) and ICE's departure and arrest division (Enforcement and Removal Operations, or ERO), were involved.

Zoom in: "ICE HSI Arizona led the execution of over a dozen criminal federal search warrants," which resulted in the arrest of 35 undocumented immigrants, the statement said.

• In addition to HSI and ERO, IRS-Criminal Investigations, U.S. Marshals Service and Border Patrol, assisted with the operation, per the statement.

The other side: In a statement to Axios, Zipps Sports Grill said it "has not been provided with any charging documents or detailed information beyond what has been publicly released by federal authorities."
