Echo Canyon Trail closes at Camelback Mountain — try these hikes instead

Catch up quick: Phoenix officials temporarily closed the trail to investigate possible erosion after a storm last month.

• The city determined that three loose boulders must be removed by injecting expanding grout that will cause them to break apart.
• The city will take advantage of the closure to complete restroom renovations and parking lot maintenance.
• That process began Monday, and spokesperson Teleia Galaviz said the city doesn't have a reopening timeline.

State of play: Luckily, there is no shortage of other mountain treks in the Valley. Check out these quieter routes while you await Echo Canyon's grand return:

• Holbert Trail (South Mountain): This includes a pathway to Dobbins Lookout, with one of the most scenic views of the Valley.
• Sidewinder Trail (Sonoran Preserve): This 7-mile route is the most technical in the North Sonoran Preserve.
• Circumference Trail (Lookout Mountain): A moderate-to-difficult route offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
• Ridgeline Trail (Deem Hills): Several steep switchbacks guide hikers to the highest points of the North Phoenix park.
