Dozens of flights canceled as FAA cuts hit Phoenix Sky Harbor

The big picture: The unusual move by the FAA is a response to a shortage of air traffic controllers, who've gone unpaid throughout the ongoing federal government shutdown.

State of play: FAA administrator Bryan Bedford announced Wednesday that air traffic at 40 "high-traffic" U.S. airports would be cut by the end of the week.

• A 4% reduction began Friday, ramping up to 6% by Nov. 11, 8% by Nov. 13 and 10% by Nov. 14, according to the agency's emergency order.

Zoom in: As of 10am on Friday, Sky Harbor reported 58 canceled flights and 47 delays.
