Interstate 17 north near the exit onto State Route 74 is one of America's 10 riskiest roads, according to an analysis from Allstate.
Why it matters: The north Phoenix exit onto the Carefree Highway is in a relatively sparsely populated region of the Valley, but with so much growth there — it's one exit away from the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. plant — it's likely to get a lot busier soon.
State of play: Allstate listed that stretch as the sixth riskiest road in the U.S.
Threat level: The insurance company warned that weekend driving is particularly hazardous, and cited 11am-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays as the most perilous time for that segment of I-17.
The safest time was 3-7pm on weekdays.
The fine print: The rankings are based on 2024 data on each city's top road segment for hard braking, defined as decelerating 8 mph or more within one second while driving at least 35 mph, and speeding more than 15 mph over the posted limit.
