Arizona Gov. Hobbs weighs Trump border plan

Catch up quick: The Trump administration announced Friday it was putting the Department of Defense in charge of a 60-foot-wide land stretch known as the Roosevelt Reservation, which runs along the border in California, Arizona and New Mexico.

• The military would be able to use that land to stage operations and detain immigrants suspected of crossing the border illegally.

Driving the news: Over the next 45 days, the Pentagon will take control of a strip in New Mexico, east of Fort Huachuca, and put up additional fencing and warning signs about trespassing, per the Associated Press.

State of play: The Arizona governor wants to ensure the Defense Department mission is dedicated to genuine border security and not just messaging, Slater said; but as long as it meets her criteria, she's open to it.

Zoom in: Hobbs could be amenable to Trump's plans, depending on the details.

• "She's been pretty consistent that we need more resources on the border and we need border security," Slater said.

Between the lines: Trump's order explicitly excludes Native American reservations, which would exempt rom military control the 62-mile border that the Tohono O'odham Nation shares with Mexico.

• Slater said federal respect for tribal lands was among Hobbs' biggest concerns with Trump's order.
• "How is that actually operationalized?" Slater said, adding "there's still the concern about what exactly are they doing and what does this look like in action?"
• Hobbs also wants to ensure that private property rights along the border are respected, Slater said.
