West Nile virus infections were down statewide last year, particularly in Maricopa County.
By the numbers: The Centers for Disease Control counted 31 Arizona cases of West Nile virus in humans in 2024.
Twenty cases were in Maricopa County, with four in Pinal County, three apiece in Gila and Pima counties, and one case in Cochise County.
Non-human infections were also found in Navajo County.
Catch up quick: That's a significant drop from 2023, when Arizona had 46 confirmed human infections, 41 of them in Maricopa, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS).
ADHS reported another 36 probable cases that year that weren't confirmed.
