LeDu Thai brings bold flavor to downtown Phoenix

Zoom in: The eatery is housed in an industrial-style building near Roosevelt and Fifth streets, but the interior beckons with warm and inviting decor.

• The emerald green walls are covered in paintings, sculptures and mirrors and the booths are adorned with fabric featuring galloping zebras. Dim lighting and live greenery complete the moody vibe.

Best bites:

• Hat-Yai fried chicken: These wings are marinated in coconut milk before they're dropped in a deep fryer, providing a delightful (and audible) crunch with every bite.
• Gaeng Panang nuer: This version of Panang curry served with braised beef couples the classic coconut milk sweetness with a lemongrass flare. The curry dishes start at a medium-spice level, what I ordered, and though I enjoyed the rush of heat in each bite, I required two pitchers of water to make it through.
• Pad ki-mao: Chewy wide noodles are piled high with a fragrant combination of Thai basil, onion and long, hot chili strands.

The bottom line: While I enjoyed the sweet heat of the curry, I had immediate order envy after taste-testing my dining companion's bold and basil-y pad ki-mao.

• On my next visit, I'll definitely try the other noodle dishes.
