Broadway Curve artwork will bring prickly pear fruit to Interstate 10

• The maroon structures are meant to mimic Prickly Pear cactus fruit.

State of play: The structures have been visible on the side of Interstate 10 since last summer and a few have been installed on the bridge.

• Right now, they look like sporadically placed, giant purple thumbs.
• Yes, but: Renderings of the completed design are more obviously an ode to the iconic desert plant.

Zoom in: The artwork, funded by the city of Tempe, was designed by local artists Matthew and Maria Salenger of coLAB Studio.

The bottom line: "City Fruit" will be in full bloom when the Broadway Curve Improvement Project is completed this spring, per ADOT.
