The Grand Canyon Railway received a $3.4 million federal grant earlier this month to convert one of its classic diesel trains into a zero-emission, battery-powered locomotive.
Why it matters: This is the next step in the railroad's environmental evolution after converting the steam locomotives to run on recycled vegetable oil in 2009, the tourism group said in a statement.
If you go: The new battery-powered train is expected to hit the tracks in 2027. The railway runs daily scenic rides from Williams to the Grand Canyon.
