Longtime Republican U.S. Rep. David Schweikert has defeated Democratic challenger Amish Shah in the highly competitive 1st Congressional District, the AP reports.
Why it matters: With party control of the U.S. House still in flux, national Republicans and Democrats are watching every uncalled competitive race in the country.
- Only two of Arizona's nine congressional districts are considered competitive, one being the north Phoenix and Scottsdale-based 1st District.
Flashback: Schweikert fended off a stronger-than-expected challenge from Democrat Jevin Hodge in 2022, his first year in his current district, winning by about 3,200 votes.
- Schweikert was first elected to the U.S. House in 2010.
What we're watching: The 6th Congressional District race between U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani and former state lawmaker Kirsten Engel is the only Arizona U.S. House contest that remains too close to call.
