Beep beep! This handsome greater roadrunner visited my front yard yesterday and I couldn't help but share him with you.
State of play: I moved to Ahwatukee a few months ago and have been enchanted by all the desert wildlife, especially these cartoonish-looking birds, which I most often see — you guessed it — running across roads.
4 fun facts: According to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum:
- The greater roadrunner can catch speeds up to 15 miles per hour.
- They capture and eat small snakes, lizards, insects and baby quail.
- They're members of the cuckoo family.
- They have two toes pointing forward and two pointing backward on each foot.
