Congratulations to Thomas G., the first of many readers to give us the correct location of Friday's "Where in the Valley?" photo.
The unique tree-shaped columns are at the former Valley National Bank location — now a Chase Bank branch — at 44th Street and Camelback Road.
State of play: The building features some of the Valley's most unique architecture, from the dendriform columns to the partially crescent-shaped building to the Arizona Yavapai schist embedded in the exterior stucco walls.
Flashback: The Valley National Bank building was constructed in 1967 and designed by architect Frank Henry of the firm Weaver & Drover.
The bank touted the new building as a "storybook image," and Weaver intended for the sand-colored stucco and the stones embedded in it to evoke a desert theme, the Arizona Republic reported around its opening.
Context: Henry was the first graduate of ASU's College of Architecture in 1960.
