Aliyah Alpert is Arizona's new spelling bee champion.
State of play: Alpert, a home-schooled eighth grader from Yavapai County, prevailed over 27 opponents at the 2024 Arizona Spelling Bee at the Madison Center for the Arts on Saturday.
The winning word was "volemic," which Merriam-Webster defines as "of, relating to, or concerned with the volume of circulating blood or plasma."
Isabelle Garcia, a seventh grader from Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School, won second place.
The Arizona Educational Foundation, which sponsors the bee, will help send Alpert and Garcia to May's Scripps National Spelling Bee in the Washington, D.C., area.
