"Volemic" wins the spelling bee for 8th grader

Aliyah Alpert is Arizona's new spelling bee champion.

State of play: Alpert, a home-schooled eighth grader from Yavapai County, prevailed over 27 opponents at the 2024 Arizona Spelling Bee at the Madison Center for the Arts on Saturday.

  • The winning word was "volemic," which Merriam-Webster defines as "of, relating to, or concerned with the volume of circulating blood or plasma."
  • Isabelle Garcia, a seventh grader from Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School, won second place.
  • The Arizona Educational Foundation, which sponsors the bee, will help send Alpert and Garcia to May's Scripps National Spelling Bee in the Washington, D.C., area.
