Reviewing Yumbar, a new restaurant at the Royale

I've been waiting to check out The Royale since I saw the sign go up last year, and now that it's open, I stopped by to see what Yumbar had to offer.

State of play: The weather was beautiful, so I took a seat in the open-air Flamingo Room rather than the indoor area.

  • As you might've guessed, the room is very flamingo-themed, including a large, brightly colored mural and some Florida-style decorative birds.

What I ordered: They've got a full menu of great-looking cocktails, and I got the Mark Daddy, which is Yumbar's take on an old-fashioned, with Ancho Reyes liqueur.

  • More specifically, I got the Spicy Mark Daddy, which substitutes habanero syrup.
  • I also ordered the jalapeño popper sandwich, a flat-top grill-pressed sammy with jalapeños, cream cheese, pepperjack and sriracha on multigrain bread.

The verdict: The habanero syrup added some great kick to the Spicy Mark Daddy, but the cocktail wasn't too spicy and was very refreshing in the open-air Flamingo Room.

  • The jalapeño popper sandwich, well, it popped. I loved the sriracha oozing out between bites of the peppers and cheese.
  • Next time I'll add some chicken or a burger patty to go with it.
