Arizona Coyotes' Travis Dermott flouts NHL Pride Tape ban

Arizona Coyotes defenseman Travis Dermott wrapped the top of his hockey stick with Pride Tape, in open violation of the NHL's new prohibition on "specialty" gear, during the team's home opener over the weekend.

Why it matters: Dermott's demonstration is the first of what's likely to be many violations of a policy that critics have called a step backward for inclusivity in the league.

Flashback: In June, the NHL announced teams would no longer wear specialty warmup jerseys to commemorate theme nights. The decision came after several players refused to wear the attire during Pride Nights last season.

Earlier this month, the league expanded its ban to include using Pride Tape at any time. Players have used the rainbow tape to show support for the LGBTQ+ community for the past seven years, NPR reported.

What they're saying: Dermott didn't make a public statement about the tape after the Coyotes' 2-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday. But he used Pride Tape when playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, telling ESPN in 2021 he has "some family that is involved in the LGBTQ community. So, I'd like to step forward and in the future take part in supporting them more vigorously."

The latest: The NHL told The Athletic it would review Dermott's conduct "in due course" when asked if he would face a fine or discipline.

The Coyotes had not heard anything from the league about punishment, the team told ESPN Sunday.

What's next: The Coyotes on Friday will be the first team to host a Pride Night this season.
