Soft-serve and frozen yogurt is cool (no pun intended) again, and New Orleans has happily climbed back on the bandwagon.
Zoom in: One of the city's newest spots to enjoy the trend is Ruthie's Frozen Custard, which brings the Midwestern dessert down South.
- Custard notably uses egg yolks, and typically contains less air than ice cream, making it extra creamy and thick.
- Ruthie's founder, Adam Gerber, is a lifelong ice cream lover, he told The Pearl, and after working at a custard shop in Chicago after the pandemic, he decided to make the jump from music production to crafting custard.
Dig in: The result is pretty sweet.
- Ruthie's Frozen Custard is on Jena Street, just off the busiest stretch of Freret, which makes it a great location for a dinner-and-dessert kind of night.
- The menu includes lots of ways to customize with toppings and syrups, and a daily vegan option, too.
What I ordered: The mix-in options are so vast, I genuinely had a hard time choosing, but I settled on a vanilla spinner ($7.50) with chocolate syrup and Reese's Cups.
- The custard was super creamy and so thick I couldn't pull my spoon out without holding the base of the cup.
The bottom line: As someone who's always making excuses to order dessert, I'll happily be back very soon.
