Witches Brew Coffee is a new-ish, whimsical coffee shop in Mid-City.
Why it matters: It's a delicious destination beyond Summerween.
The big picture: Co-owner Deanna Holdcraft opened Witches Brew in February as a cafe "rooted in magic, warmth and community," an Instagram post says.
- She makes the shop's pastries.
- The "potions" menu has drinks like Faerie Fog, Blueberry Bog Brew and Fireside Ritual.
- There's an extensive loose-leaf tea menu that includes yaupon holly and fireweed, two options not commonly found in local coffee shops.
The vibe: More enchanted forest than scary creatures that go bump in the night.
- The counters are decorated with moss, beetles and cauldrons. Incense perfumes the room.
- Godwin is the shop's guardian gargoyle, and several customers left coins on him during my visit.
- There's also a mix of seating options for catching up with friends or working on your laptop.
My order: The Veil ($7), an iced golden Earl Grey drink with orange blossom syrup, and a chocolate cupcake with grass-like green frosting and a chocolate beetle.
- Both were whimsical without sacrificing taste.
Zoom in: The shop also hosts tarot readings, book clubs and aura photography sessions.
- Plus, it has books, candles, tarot cards, calendars and other witch-related items for sale.
- A portion of every coffee sale goes to Tomato Club Rescue, a Louisiana kitten rescue group.
The bottom line: Witches Brew is a fun addition to the local coffee scene and fits right in with our city's supernatural side.
