Construction on the new Algiers ferry terminal should begin in about a month, an RTA spokesperson says.
Why it matters: The renovation will be a welcome update for riders who have spent years waiting on the ferry in the open elements.
The big picture: The RTA completed the ferry's Canal Street side terminal in summer 2023, but the overall scope of the Algiers project is a little larger because it includes a ferry maintenance facility and barge, too.
The Algiers terminal has also been envisioned as a community space, with RTA offices in a new second floor and a concession area on the first floor.
Renovations also include an updated facade, air conditioning, improved accessibility and sheltered boarding areas, RTA CEO Lona Edwards Hankins said at an official groundbreaking Monday.
Terminal construction is expected to take about a year, officials have said.
Follow the money: The project's cost rings in at about $27 million, officials said Monday, and is backed by federal money.
Of that, $11.4 million is for the terminal and $15.4 million is for the barge and maintenance area.
