LSU gets new president, chancellor, athletic director

Between the lines: The leadership chaos comes as Gov. Jeff Landry is raising some eyebrows for throwing his influence around in conversations about who leads the state's flagship university.

Catch up quick: Everything went sideways after the LSU Tigers' dismal 49-25 loss to Texas A&M on Oct 25.

• The next morning, as Yahoo Sports first reported, Landry hosted key decision makers at the governor's mansion to discuss logistics for ending coach Brian Kelly's contract. A day later, Kelly was out of a job, and LSU was on the hook for his reported $54 million buyout.
• Then, Landry told reporters Oct. 29 that LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward wouldn't pick the next head coach.
• A day later, Woodward was out, too.

Zoom out: Those exits brought the athletic department into play as part of a broader LSU leadership vacuum, the Louisiana Illuminator's Piper Hutchinson reports.

• LSU President William Tate left in June, among several departures from other key positions.

The latest: The LSU Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to start filling the gaps.

• Wade Rousse, the current president at McNeese State University, is the the new LSU president. He was Landry's rumored top choice, the LSU Reveille reports.
• And, in a surprise move, the board separated leadership roles for LSU and the LSU System for the first time since 2012. Current University of Alabama provost James Dalton was named system chancellor to LSU's network of campuses across the state.
• By day's end, LSU had a new athletic director, too, with Rousse picking Verge Ausberry for the role, the AP and others have reported.

What we're watching: The head coach job is still open.

• At least we know Nick Saban doesn't seem interested in the gig.
