Chef Dook Chase is hitting the small screen again with a new Food Network show.
Why it matters: "Family Recipe Showdown" pairs Chase with actress Octavia Spencer as host and offers a new spotlight for the New Orleans chef, whose family is no stranger to representing Creole cooking on a national scale.
Zoom in: Chase is the head chef at Dooky Chase's, which his grandparents first opened in the Treme, and he's the chef behind CBD brunch and lunch spot Chapter IV.
- Family recipes are the core of the new show.
- "Everyone has a food memory, whether your hand was in a pot or you were just in the kitchen listening to stories or doing some other element," Chase told Food Network of his experience filming.
- "As we were sharing our food stories and sharing the upbringing of what we did in the kitchen and family gatherings, you find that common ground."
How it works: "Family Recipe Showdown" is a cooking competition show in which two-person teams compete for $10,000.
- Competitors end up cooking childhood favorite recipes from guest judges like Danielle Brooks, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Chastain, Al Roker, Tim Gunn and Tina Knowles.
- It premiered on Food Network in mid-July, with an eight-episode run slated for the first season.
Fun fact: "Family Recipe Showdown" was filmed at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in Central City, The Advocate reports.
How to watch: New episodes air Thursdays at 8pm Central. Schedule.
