New Orleans, Jefferson Parish summer library reading programs begin

In New Orleans, kids and adults alike are encouraged to read 800 minutes, plus complete a handful of other library activities, like using a Culture Pass or planting some seeds from the Seed Library.

• Everyone who finishes the challenge will receive a tote bag designed by artist Sean G. Clark.
• Plus, Second Harvest Food Bank is offering free snacks to people under 18 during limited times at the Mid-City Library, Rosa F. Keller Library & Community Center and the Central City Library. Get details.
• The last day to finish the challenge and pick up your prize is July 31. Register.

In Jefferson Parish, you've got two challenges to choose from:

• In the main event, participants will earn 1 point each time they read for an hour, finish a book or complete a library activity. Prizes are earned at every 5 points, the library says, and they include coloring books, Croc charms, enamel pins and raffle tickets to win a Kindle Paperwhite. Register.
• But for another challenge, if you visit five library locations and get a "passport" stamped at each, you can score a free tote bag. Details.
