The Backstreet Cultural Museum has expanded again, adding a new room to its collection of artifacts of New Orleans' Black Masking Indian, Baby Doll and second-line culture.
Why it matters: It's the city's only museum space dedicated to New Orleans' unique Black cultural heritage.
Flashback: Sylvester Francis founded the museum in the Treme in 1999.
After his death in 2020, his daughter, Dominique Dilling-Francis, took over, The Times-Picayune's Doug MacCash reports, shepherding the museum through a transition to a new space on St. Philip Street.
Zoom in: That allowed Dilling-Francis to grow the collection in the years since.
"We need to add more layers of the culture, to keep up with new ideas," she told MacCash.
If you go: The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
Backstreet also produces an exhibit inside the Grand Stand at Jazz Fest.
