A Tulane Avenue property is getting another makeover as the hotel formerly known as the Drifter has reopened as the Maidstone New Orleans.
Why it matters: The Mid-City hangout was popular for its pool bar.
The big picture: The Drifter sold last fall to a hotel development group, The Times-Picayune reported at the time.
- The new owners, ISMD, recently completed another hotel project in the East Hamptons, a press release says, also called The Maidstone.
- "With a passion for transforming historic boutique properties into modern-day sanctuaries, The Maidstone New Orleans marks the thrilling start of the brand's expansion — the first of many incredible hotels to join its growing collection," the press release says.
Zoom in: The Maidstone marks a new era for the 1956 motor lodge-style motel, which is along a rapidly transforming stretch of Tulane Avenue.
- Just more than a decade ago, its reputation was one of drugs and prostitution.
- Then, as Mid-City gentrified around it, New Orleans entrepreneur Zach Kupperman and others transformed the motel into The Drifter, which instantly became a den of cool — and cooling off — known for its drop-in pool bar.

As the Maidstone, the Drifter's 20 rooms become 18 rooms and suites, according to a press release. It opened Feb. 18, a representative tells Axios New Orleans.
- Each has cork flooring, custom birch millwork and furniture, custom tapestries by Oaxacan textile artist Ismael Gutierrez Montano, built-in wardrobes and rattan mirrors.
- The lobby bar is now the Maidstone Lounge and the outdoor space has also been overhauled, the release says.
- That includes the saltwater pool, plus a new fire pit and a menu that includes cocktails and "pool bites in partnership with local food companies and neighborhood favorites," a release says.
If you go: Hotel rates will start at $250, a representative says.
- The pool and bar will be open to the public. Drop-in pool passes are $25, or $600 for an annual pass.
