New Orleans blood donors give stunning amount in wake of terror attack

Context: Officials said Thursday that the death toll from Wednesday's attack had increased to 14 and the number of injured victims was around 35.

By the numbers: On a typical day, Wheels said, the Blood Center likes to have a three to four day supply of blood on hand.

• But after a holiday lull, the Center was down to 1.5 days of supply when the attack occurred.
• For an average blood drive, the Center will bring in about 30 units of blood, Wheels said.
• By Thursday afternoon, The Blood Center's Canal Street location had already received donations from 150 people. Many more were still waiting to donate, and at least six other locations were also accepting donations.

One of them was a man who, though he declined to give his name, pulled up his shirt to show what he said was a graze wound from a bullet during the attack. He works at Prohibition on Bourbon Street, he says.

• " People were just trying to have a good time," said Ren Maheu, a French Quarter tour guide. "The least I can do is show up and donate some blood."
