Mike Johnson will keep his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, Louisiana voters decided Tuesday.
Why it matters: As current speaker of the House, Johnson sits at the top of congressional leadership positions, though Election Day results nationwide could tilt that balance of power.
State of play: Johnson was heavily favored to win Louisiana's 4th District primary as voters headed into Election Day. The AP called the race at about 8:35pm.
- He faced just one opponent, Joshua Morott, a Republican who, per the Times-Picayune, did not raise enough money to require reporting it to the Federal Election Commission.
What he said: "Many of you know our nation is in very serious times right now, and we've got to have steady hands at the wheel, and that's what we've tried to do in these unprecedented, uncharted waters in which we find ourselves," Johnson said during his election night party in Shreveport, according to Axios' Juliegrace Brufke.
- "There's never before been a speaker change in the middle of a congress ever in the whole history of the country, and there's never before been a speaker of the house elected from the state of Louisiana, so that's pretty cool."
Between the lines: In Louisiana's jungle primary system, any candidate who earns more than 50% of the vote on Tuesday wins outright.
- In races where no candidate does that, the top two finishers head to runoffs Dec. 7.
What's next: If Republicans hold the House, Johnson expects a "fully supportive" ally in former President Trump, Brufke reports.
