Lafitte Greenway to expand to Canal Street

The big picture: Since the Lafitte Greenway opened in 2015, it's become a core part of how many people in New Orleans get around.

• The pathway, which currently stretches from the Treme to just past Carrollton Avenue, sees traffic from an average of 1,000 people a day, according to the Lafitte Greenway Partnership.
• But that number jumps up to 4,000 during Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest, the partnership says.
• Not only has that helped bolster economic development along that stretch, but the green space has also become home to about 500 native trees and a 6,500-square-foot rain garden, the partnership says.

What they're saying: "When we make the Lafitte Greenway better, we are making the whole city better," reads the partnership's new strategic plan.

Follow the money: The greenway's $4.8 million expansion is already funded through city bonds, according to The Times-Picayune's Joni Hess.

• The expansion, plus additional projects to connect the greenway to nearby neighborhoods and improve drainage, should be complete by December 2026, Hess reports.

Meanwhile: A new community farm is also set to break ground along the greenway.

• The new Sprout Community Farm will be between North Dorgenois and North Rocheblave streets, which puts it near the Hey! Cafe and Flour Moon Bagels.
• It'll have personal gardeners' beds, plus a greenhouse, a community pantry and fridge, and a shady area for community education, a press release says.
