Mawí Tortillas has carved out a niche for itself in a Metairie strip mall with its homemade tortillas and Latin American dishes, including breakfast.
Why it matters: The New York Times says it is one of metro New Orleans' best restaurants.
The big picture: Mawí has an open kitchen with fresh tortillas, chips and other baked goods stacked in the display case.
- You place your order and sit in the casual dining room next door.
What I ordered: Egg tacos ($11 for 3), El Salvadoreño breakfast plate ($12) and yuca con chicharron ($12).
- The egg, bean and cheese tacos were the star. The eggs were cheesy and fluffy, and I kept returning to them over my meal.
- The yuca dish was hearty, and it was a big enough portion that I ate it for lunch as well. I bought extra bags of homemade tortilla chips to enjoy at home, too.
If you go: The restaurant is also known for its pupusas and birria tacos. It's open for breakfast, lunch and early dinner.
