New Orleans second-line clubs kick off parade season

New Orleans' second-line clubs begin the long parading season Sunday, starting with the Valley of Silent Men Social Aid and Pleasure Club.
Why it matters: The Sunday celebrations are a vibrant part of New Orleans Black culture honoring social aid and pleasure club history.
The big picture: Dozens of clubs second-line on Sunday afternoons through most of the year, taking breaks for Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest and the hottest parts of summer.
- They wind through Uptown and downtown neighborhoods, partying in the streets for hours.
- The second-lines all have music, dancing, vendors, stylish threads and a jubilant spirit, but each one has its own flair.
Here's the schedule from WWOZ for the next few weeks. The season ends in June 2025.
- Aug. 25 at 3pm: Valley of Silent Men's 40th anniversary second-line. See the route.
- Sept. 8: Young Men Olympian.
- Sept. 15: Good Fellas.
- Sept 22: Young Men Olympian.
- Oct. 6: Family Ties.
- Oct. 13: Prince & Lady of Wales.
- Oct. 20: Men & Ladies of Class.
- Oct. 27: Black Men of Labor and Original Four.
