New Orleans digital media nonprofit wins $100,000

Listen up: Be Loud Studios got started after Turner and fellow co-founder Alex Owens noticed how much more engaged their students were in class when offered a mic.

• That turned into a student-run radio station, which eventually grew into Be Loud Studios.

The latest: Be Loud Studios won $100,000 from The Lonely Hearts Club's $1 million Funding Challenge.

• The organization will use the money to hire two part-time positions aimed at building a shareable curriculum and bringing young voices into more local media.

What she says: "Teens need to speak up about all that is impacting them — everything from social media to fair wages, and when we listen, we can connect and make change," Turner tells Axios New Orleans.

• "We know our work builds connection and confidence for the young people who make it. We also know it's powerful for building empathy and connection for those who listen."
