New Orleans educator Edgar "Dooky" Chase III dies

Edgar "Dooky" Chase III died Wednesday, according to a family statement.

  • An educator and community leader, Chase was the son of restaurateurs Edgar Chase Jr. and Leah Chase.

Zoom in: Chase was a 1967 Jesuit graduate and Marine Corps veteran who became a CPA and an attorney.

  • He retired from Dillard University in 2009 as vice president for master facilities planning and management and dean of business, according to WWL.
  • But in 2010, he returned to education briefly to work at Delgado Community College.

What they said: Chase "was a principled man, who was joyfully dedicated to being of service to others," the family wrote in a statement.

  • "Dooky was filled with passion and faith which was exhibited in his daily life and in his interactions with others. He believed in the power of love for mankind and was guided by the ideals of liberty."
