LSU Litter Institute to take on Louisiana's trash

• Plus, severe weather and the state's swamps, marshes and other waterways create a lace-like geography that presents unusual clean-up challenges.

What's happening: An $800,000 appropriation from the state Legislature is funding the effort, which will build on lessons learned from the Keep Louisiana Beautiful litter study results released earlier this year.

• That study found that the state's roads are filled with about 144 million pieces of trash.
• And Louisiana spends more than $91 million on managing that mess each year.
