Whether you’re in for the sizzle of a hot flattop or the flame-licked char you get on a grill, there’s a New Orleans joint that has your cheeseburger cravings covered. (With a hubcap, no less, in at least one case on this list.)
Here, we round up seven of our favorite burgers from around town. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it’ll definitely get you started in your search for a new favorite.
Beachcorner Bar and Grill
Head here when you’ve got a serious appetite. Why? The 10-ounce burgers are no joke. Also, note that this is a bar, so you’ve got to be 21 to enter.
What to order: Hot & Spicy Beachburger, piled high with jalapeños, pepper jack cheese and hot sauce. Get the cheese fries, and plan to share.
Where to find it: 4905 Canal St.
Bub's Burgers
The smashburgers from this relative newcomer leapt onto the scene with an early-pandemic food truck, and it didn’t take long before their popularity landed them a Mid-City storefront.
What to order: If you’re feeling adventurous, go for the Peanut Bubber, with two patties, American cheese, bacon and creamy peanut butter.
Where to find it: 4413 Banks St.
Bud's Broiler
Perhaps the most revered of all New Orleans' classic burgers, the charcoal grill at Bud’s has been feeding families and sobering up late nights for more than seven decades.
What to order: A No. 4, the hickory sauce burger with shredded cheddar and onions. Don’t forget a bottle of Barq’s Root Beer.
Where to find it:
- 5101 Canal Blvd.
- 4101 Jefferson Highway, Metairie.
- 2800 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Kenner.
Clover Grill
Frankly, we should all be offended that Bourbon Street isn’t known more for its burgers over, well, you know, everything else it has to offer. Drop into this classic diner to enjoy the cheeky menus and people-watching from the wide, streetside window.
What to order: Build-Your-Burger any time of day (the diner is open 24 hours) and listen for the sizzle when the chef places it on the grill top under a hubcap.
Where to find it: 900 Bourbon St.
The Company Burger
The signature burger here arrives understated, but never underwhelming. Find out why Food & Wine named it to its list of the Best Burgers in the U.S. Don’t miss the mayo bar in the back.
What to order: The Company Burger, two patties that arrive with just housemade bread and butter pickles, American cheese and red onions. Don’t forget fries and a shake.
Where to find it: 4600 Freret St.
High Hat
This Freret classic is known for all things southern comfort, and the burgers are no exception.
What to order: The High Hat Burger, which comes hot off the flattop and gets covered in pimento cheese.
Where to find it: 4500 Freret St.
Port of Call
This spot is often busy, and you wouldn’t be the first to while away the wait for a table with a Neptune’s Monsoon. Just don’t forget to actually order your burger so you can sober up after the booze hits.
What to order: A mushroom cheeseburger, piled high with blue cheese, and a baked potato stuffed with cheddar, sour cream and chives.
Where to find it: 838 Esplanade Ave.
