Indiana received nearly $207 million from the rural health fund created by Republican's megabill this summer.

Why it matters: The fund aims to help rural hospitals and providers adjust to Medicaid cuts also included in the GOP bill, but some Hoosier providers Axios spoke with said the allotment won't cover the cuts hospitals will see.

The big picture: The first of five years of awards from the $50 billion fund highlights which states are winners and losers.

The average award for 2026 is $200 million.

Alaska, a rural state with unique challenges for health care access, got the second most funding after Texas.

Between the lines: Half the funding is distributed equally among states.

The other half of funding is distributed based on factors including state-level policies, such as efforts to "make rural America healthy again" like implementing the presidential fitness test in schools.

Zoom in: Indiana's award is more than the $200 million that the state applied for.

More than half of the funding will go toward regional grants.

Other priorities for the dollars include workforce development, technology and innovations such as expanded telehealth access.
