Things to Do

Expect a significant police presence and multiple downtown road detours when the 2026 NCAA Men's Final Four arrives in Indianapolis next week.

Why it matters: More than 70,000 people are expected to take part in the college basketball extravaganza each day it's in town, meaning an increased chance of interactions among attendees that could escalate to violence.

What they're saying: "We've been planning for years," IMPD chief Tanya Terry said. "We're using every tool available to protect our community and ensure public safety."

Driving the news: Somehow, next weekend is bigger than just the city hosting its ninth men's Final Four in history and its first since 2015 to not be marred by a global pandemic.

The five-day stretch of local events also includes the NCAA Division II and III men's championships, the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championships, and the HBCU All-Star Game.

Indiana Sports Corp. estimates the festivities will have an economic impact of more than $400 million.

Fun fact: This is the first time one city will host NCAA DI, DII, DIII and NIT title games in a single weekend.

Here is everything you need to know before tip-off:

2026 NIT: April 2 and 5 at Hinkle Fieldhouse and Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

NCAA Men's Final Four: April 4 and 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

HBCU All-Star Game: April 5 at Corteva Coliseum.

NCAA Division II and Division III men's championships: April 5 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Terry said IMPD has adjusted staffing to put more officers downtown and will work with state and federal partners to ensure full coverage of districts throughout the city.

In addition to officers patrolling on foot, bikes and in squad cars, police drones will be the department's eyes in the sky that will feed information to IMPD's Real-Time Crime Center.

Local police will also be enforcing Indiana's curfew law, which says children ages 15-17 may not be unsupervised in a public place between 1am and 5am Saturday and Sunday; after 11pm Sunday-Thursday; and before 5am Monday-Friday. 

Children under 15 are not to be out after 11pm or before 5am on any day.

Multiple major downtown roads will be inaccessible due to a combination of fan events and ongoing construction.

Starting Sunday, North, St. Clair and Michigan streets will be closed between Meridian and Pennsylvania streets.

Meridian Street will be closed between St. Clair and Michigan, and Pennsylvania will be down to one driving lane between St. Clair and Michigan.

To keep fans in the loop, an emergency mass text service is being established specifically for the Final Four.

When the weekend ends, registered numbers will be cleared from the system.

Population growth is slowing in most counties nationwide amid a massive drop in immigration, but the Indianapolis metro is doing its best to buck the trend. 

Why it matters: New Census data offers the best look yet at how tighter immigration enforcement is affecting America's demographic makeup.

By the numbers: Our metro area grew by over 22,000 people from 2024 to 2025 — more than 1%, double the national growth average.

The area's total population was 2,205,695 people last year.

Statewide, an Indiana University Kelley School of Business analysis found that the Hoosier State added 38,579 residents in 2025 to reach a total population of 6.97 million.

Between the lines: For the third straight year, Boone and Hancock counties were the fastest-growing in Indiana. Boone County had a 2.6% growth rate, and Hancock County grew by 2.4%.

Clark (2.1%), Hamilton (1.9%) and Johnson (1.9%) counties rounded out the top five.

What they're saying: "Since 2023, Indiana has had an average annual growth of more than 43,900 residents per year, which is the state's largest increase over a three-year stretch since adding roughly 48,700 residents a year from 2006 to 2008," Matt Kinghorn, senior demographer at the Indiana Business Research Center, said in a statement.

Zoom in: Kinghorn said while the state's growth rate between then and now is similar, the factors driving the increase has changed. 

From 2006 to 2008, the difference between births and deaths accounted for 70% of Indiana's growth. Over the past three years, migration has been responsible for 81% of gains.

Indiana had 8,561 more births than deaths in 2025, a 7% drop compared with the previous year.

International migration was the largest source of Indiana's growth in 2025, with a net inflow of 17,852 residents.

Yes, but: Net international migration to Indiana declined by 53% from 2024 to 2025, according to IU.

Zoom out: International migration fell in nine out of 10 U.S. counties between 2024 and 2025 compared with the prior period, the Census Bureau says.

State of play: That drop is hitting populous areas especially hard.

Census Bureau demographer George M. Hayward, in a statement: "The nation's largest counties ... are often international migration hubs, gaining large numbers of international migrants and losing people that move to other parts of the country via domestic migration."

"With fewer gains from international migration, these types of counties saw their population growth diminish or even turn into loss."

Case in point: California's Los Angeles County lost nearly 54,000 people from 2024 to 2025, down about -0.6%. (It remains the biggest U.S. county, with about 9.7 million people.)

The big picture: The U.S. overall still grew by 0.5% between 2024 and 2025.

But that's down from 1% over the previous period.

Nationwide natural change (births minus deaths) held steady, while international migration plummeted from about 2.8 million people to 1.3 million — about a 55% drop.

Caveat: The Census' international migration data include both foreigners and Americans coming home from abroad, including military service members.

The inspo: The Swish 2026 festival is a free immersive experience that will spread across downtown Indy next weekend with the help of Forty5 Presents, GANGGANG, Epicurean Indy and others.

The all-ages celebration will include live music and performances, new Sidewalk Galleries murals, an Epicurean market and food festival, a Herron School of Art and Design student poster giveaway and Through2Eyes walking tours.

By the numbers: According to Indy Arts Council and Indiana Sports Corp., more than 200 local artists, performers, vendors and chefs will participate.

Epicurean Indy returns to the Stutz with more than 50 food vendors, and Mokao will offer a ticketed multi-course dinner and chocolate exhibition.

Sidewalk Galleries will be updated with 60 new murals inspired by the Final Four.

This week's news from around the region includes a huge housing development in Westfield, a prestigious tennis facility in Noblesville and a local woman set to make a splash on reality TV.

🏘️ The Westfield City Council narrowly approved Ironstone, a 765-acre development that will bring more than 1,700 single-family homes and townhouses and 250 apartments to the city's far north side.

It's one of the largest residential projects in Westfield's history, and the 4-3 vote signals a growing rift between city leaders and some residents over how fast the city should grow.

The project is located on the north and south sides of 206th Street where it intersects Horton and Six Points roads, and will be built over 10 to 15 years.

Mayor Scott Willis said infrastructure upgrades, including road improvements and a new fire department, must be finished before the first house is built.

💑 Despite a Carmel man having his "Bachelorette" debut called off earlier this month, another HamCo native is getting a shot at love on the small screen.

26-year-old Delaney Kluger of Noblesville is part of the cast of "Love Overboard," Hulu's new yacht-based dating competition that premiered last week.

The show is described as "Bachelor in Paradise" meets "Love Island."

In her official show bio, Kluger says she was raised in chaos and moved to New York at 16 to pursue fashion after struggling to fit in in her hometown.

🎾 Also in Noblesville, Serena Williams' former tennis coach has plans to open a training facility near the Innovation Mile corridor.

Founded by Patrick Mouratoglou, the Mouratoglou Tennis Center is being proposed for 14469 Olio Road at the Deer Creek Business Park.

The facility would feature six indoor tennis courts, eight padel courts and four indoor futsal pitches, offering private lessons and seasonal camps

If approved, construction is expected to begin in May with a soft opening in August, a full opening in September and the academy program launching in October. A public hearing is scheduled for April 20 before the Noblesville Plan Commission.

🏨 Hospitality startup Veloce Hotels is raising funds to bring its vision for a slate of luxury motorsports-themed hotels to central Indiana, starting with a $189 million project in Carmel.

With $1.1 million already in hand, the company is opening a $5.5 million seed round to acquire potential development sites in Carmel and Westfield along the U.S. 31 corridor.

In addition to a flagship hotel in Carmel, Veloce wants to build a $135 million hotel near Grand Park Sports Campus.

🍦 Just in time for spring, Graeter's Ice Cream has opened its second Fishers location.

The new shop is off 106th Street near Lantern Road, and was chosen for its proximity to the Fishers Event Center.
