ESPN, WWE tag team brings Wrestlepalooza to Indianapolis

The big picture: The show marks the first roll of a major streaming gamble by ESPN and WWE as the latter moves its monthly premium live events from NBC's Peacock to the former's new direct-to-consumer platform.

What he said: WWE chief content officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque explained why Indy was chosen as the host site for its ESPN debut at TED Sports Indianapolis earlier this month.

• "It is a wonderful place to host massive events," Levesque said. "You and this region and everybody here are very adept at Super Bowl, and large scale events, Indy 500. It's an easy hub for people to come in from around the country, and the hospitality you put out is second to none."

Yes, but: This "extra" show — which is headlined by a match between the retiring John Cena and the returning Brock Lesnar — raises questions about the rest of WWE's agreement to bring three big shows to Indy.

• WWE was reportedly thrilled with Indy's turn hosting the Royal Rumble to start 2025. A record-breaking 70,347 fans packed Lucas Oil to make it the biggest rumble ever and WWE's third-largest gate.
• But the Summerslam and WrestleMania events promised in the partnership still don't have solid dates.

Between the lines: Adding to the uncertainty is the WWE's growing willingness to host its biggest shows overseas in search of a big payday.

• Speculation that international partners could hop the line for the right price was realized when WWE announced last week that WrestleMania 43 will be held in Saudi Arabia in 2027.
• Previously, the WWE had an agreement to host that show in Nashville, contingent on the completion of a new enclosed football stadium that is targeting a 2027 open date.
• Las Vegas already has dibs on WrestleMania 42, and some insider predictions suggest that Indianapolis could be waiting until at least 2030 for Mania.
