Republican Jim Banks has won the race for Indiana's open U.S. Senate seat, the Associated Press reports.
Why it matters: Banks is a rising conservative voice in former President Trump's Republican Party and his victory in the open race keeps the seat for Republicans fighting for control of Congress.
Context: After nearly eight years in Congress, Banks will move from the U.S. House to assume the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Mike Braun to run for governor.
Banks, a military veteran who served in Afghanistan, was the frontrunner throughout the entire race, with a huge fundraising advantage over Democrat Valerie McCray.
He's stayed in lockstep with Trump.
The other side: McCray,a psychologist from Indianapolis, made history as the first Black woman to become a major party's nominee for the U.S. Senate in Indiana.
She also ran a long-shot bid for president as an Independent in 2020.
