Meet the Maker: Mary Mindiola

• Formally trained in graphic design, Mindiola used to work with paint and textiles.
• Her shift to exclusively creating art with discarded items came after a trip to the Caribbean that opened her eyes to the impact of plastic pollution.
• Her collages support an artistic ideology of every piece being a vital part of a larger, interconnected world.

Zoom in: Mindiola co-founded Indy Latina Artists in 2022 to highlight the work of other Latina visual artists in Central Indiana.

• In early October, the organization is hosting "Amor y Dolor" — its first juried art exhibit featuring local work inspired by the lives of iconic Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
• The deadline for artist submissions is Sept. 20.

What she's saying: "This show is a very, very challenging show because it's the first show where we're going to unite pain and love together," Mindiola told WISH-TV.
