Exclusive: Switchyards expands to East End, Bellaire

How it works: Memberships cost $129 a month, or $100 a month with an annual commitment, and include 24/7 access to every Switchyards location nationwide. The clubs have quiet spaces and meeting spaces, along with complimentary coffee and tea.

• East End memberships go on sale Aug. 27 ahead of the club's Aug. 31 opening. There are 250 spots.

State of work: Houston has become one of Switchyards' "best markets," Tavani says. The Montrose club "sold out faster than almost any other city, and it's stayed consistently busy," with people using it one or two days a week as part of their routine.

What they're saying: "The true magic of Switchyards comes out in a second, third, fourth location," Tavani says, adding the company hopes to continue to expand in Houston.

Zoom in: The East End club will open in the 1940s Imperial Laundromat on Harrisburg Boulevard, incorporating elements of the building's history into the design.

• Tavani says Switchyards favors residential neighborhoods over business districts because members want a convenient place close to home. "We call ourselves a neighborhood work club, and so we drop our locations in residential neighborhoods, not central business districts."
