Houston is home to several Juneteenth events celebrating the arrival of Union troops in Galveston on June 19, 1865, to enforce the abolition of slavery in Texas.
The big picture: Juneteenth came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
Catch up quick: Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 after decades of annual community celebrations across the country.
- Texas is one of 33 states that gives workers a paid day off for Juneteenth.
Here are our most-anticipated events and celebrations happening around Houston this weekend:
🗣️ Join state Rep. Jolanda Jones (D-Houston) for Juneteenth Historic Black Story Time at Texas Southern University. The event features talks from a Bloody Sunday survivor and students who lived through forced school integration outside Houston in the 1970s.
- Free. 5:30-8:30pm Thursday.
🎨 See works of art about the legacy, resilience and joy surrounding Juneteenth and enjoy family-friendly activities and storytelling at Richard Brock Park with Arts District Houston.
- Free. 11am Friday.
🏖️ Head to Galveston for an immersive cultural experience celebrating emancipation at the Official Juneteenth Return at The Strand's Nia Cultural Center.
- Free, but an RSVP is required. 2pm Friday.
📽️ While you're on the island, cool off at Moody Gardens while watching "Juneteenth: The Galveston Story" at the center's 3D theater.
- Tickets are $4. Showtimes are 2:10pm and 3:10pm Friday.
🎉 Celebrate the holiday in Third Ward at Juneteenth on Almeda, which will feature vendors, food and music.
- Free. 3-8pm Friday.
🎤 Or catch a concert featuring Houston rapper Scarface, the Juneteenth Choir and other acts at The Reunion celebration at Emancipation Park.
- 4-10pm Friday.
🍺 Be the first to try the Jubilee Craft Beer, a collaboration between Houston-area breweries Hop Topic and Under the Radar, at the beer release party in Midtown.

🎶 Check out the KTSU Juneteenth Culture Fest featuring Maze and Chanté Moore at Miller Outdoor Theatre.
- Free. 8:15pm Friday.
🌳 Join community members at Hermann Park for a Juneteenth cookout with food, games, music and more.
- Free. 2-8pm Saturday.
🤣 Laugh it up at the Trillteenth Comedy Experience at Station Theater, which will feature two shows Saturday.
- A variety show at 6pm is pay-as-you-can. An improv show at 7:30pm is $15.
