HGO's "Barber of Seville" leans into cartoonish fun

The Houston Grand Opera is presenting the comedic, mischievous "Barber of Seville" through May 10.

State of the opera: Rossini's classic follows Figaro, a quick-thinking barber who helps a count win over a young woman kept under the watch of her possessive guardian.

My thought bubble: The opera leans into the silliness — exaggerated personalities, cartoonish costumes, a colorful set and goofy background characters.

It felt like watching old hand-drawn animations. It took a minute to settle in, but it grew on me. It's light, playful and funny.

If you go: Tickets start at $25. The April 30 performance is Pride Night and the May 8 performance is Noche de Ópera, where there will be supertitles in English and Spanish.
