This Valentine's Day, many Houston-area couples are saying the big "I do" at free pop-up weddings.
Why it matters: As microweddings continue to gain traction, these one-day elopement venues offer an affordable, lower-stress way to get married, keeping weddings light and fun.
State of love: Brazos Bookstore, the city of Sugar Land and Unity of Houston are among the places offering free weddings this weekend.
Zoom in: Sugar Land is hosting its first-ever mass group wedding, marrying 100 couples at once on the steps of City Hall and Town Square.
- The event filled up within 48 hours of the city's announcement. Sugar Land's Municipal Court Judge Matthew Montes, who planned the event, will officiate starting at 10am.
- A DJ, cake, music and dancing are planned. The event is open to the public.
Flashback: Sugar Land court hosted its first Valentine's Day wedding event last year, marrying 17 couples in short intervals — an effort Montes called a "resounding success."
- "Most of what we do as a court is adversarial in nature," Montes tells Axios, adding he "thought it'd be nice to do something for the community" that's more positive.
Meanwhile, Brazos Bookstore, an indie shop that's been in Houston for over 50 years, is turning its shelves into a Vegas-style wedding chapel for the first time, hosting ceremonies every 15 minutes throughout the day.
- Book lovers can get married or renew their vows at a makeshift altar surrounded by books. As of Monday afternoon, 25 couples had signed up, with just one spot still open.
- The bookstore will stay open, inviting the public to browse and witness strangers' love along the way.
Behind the scenes: The idea came together during a casual brainstorming session among staff, who decided to lean into romance and see what would happen.
- "We just wanted to give people the experience of being able to get married in a bookstore and a cute way to elope real quick if they want to," Keerthi Tumuluri, Brazos' inventory manager, tells Axios.
