Houston Museum of Natural Science introduces app for people with low vision

Between the lines: Rosenberg says most visually impaired individuals have some usable vision, and this tech lets them engage with exhibits in a way that feels natural — unlike sight-replacing options like audio or touch alone.

What they're saying: "Sometimes people are still just visual learners. I was always a visual learner, and when people tried to give me just audio options, it just didn't process in my brain," Rosenberg says. "When we think about older adults who are maybe experiencing vision loss for one reason or another, they are oftentimes still trying to make use of that vision that they have."

The big picture: This partnership builds on HMNS's ongoing accessibility efforts, which have expanded significantly over the past decade — especially since the museum established the accessibility programs manager role.

HMNS offers sensory-friendly programs, including touch tours, pre-visit guides, and sensory backpacks stocked with headphones, sunglasses, and fidget tools. The museum is also working to incorporate more tactile elements, allowing visitors to handle artifacts or replicas, says Matti Wallin, HMNS's accessibility programs manager.
