Harris County race results include voters rejecting Houston ISD bond

• County attorney Christian D. Menefee, also a Democrat, won reelection with 50.46%, and Democratic Sheriff Ed Gonzalez got 53.13% of the vote and claimed victory early Wednesday morning.

Driving the news: Voters in Houston ISD rejected both of the district's propositions in the $4.4 billion bond package for school infrastructure, safety and technology improvements, with roughly 58% against each of the two propositions.

The intrigue: The proposal faced fierce opposition from parents, teachers and organizers who billed the vote as a referendum on state-appointed superintendent Mike Miles. 

• The Harris County Republican and Democratic parties campaigned against the measure in a rare display of unity. 

What they're saying: "In this instance, the politics of adults beat out the needs of our children. It's unfortunate and wrong, but I want to assure you that it will not limit our ability to do the things that our students need," Miles said in a statement Tuesday night. 

• "I know our most effective principals and teachers can reach students even in the worst of facilities, because they've been doing so for more than a year. Teaching and learning will continue, and we will continue to transform this District for all students."

Zoom out: Former Mayor Sylvester Turner, a Democrat, won the late Sheila Jackson Lee's seat in U.S. House District 18, and U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Republican, was reelected in U.S. District 2.
