Slutty Vegan, the viral and vulgar plant-based restaurant chain, is getting closer to opening its first Detroit location.
Dig in: During a recent Axios work retreat in Atlanta, Georgia native and repeat customer Kristen Swilley took Axios' Casey Weldon and editor Tyler Buchanan to see what all the fuss is about.
The greeting: "We got some virgins from Ohio in the building!" shouted a worker, who made liberal use of the first half of the restaurant name.
💠Swilley's thought bubble: She ordered the "Sloppy Toppy," a jalapeño-topped plant burger with vegan bacon, plus peach pudding she called "ridiculously rich, creamy and one of the best fast-food desserts I've ever had."
💠Casey's thought bubble: "If you hadn't told me my 'chick'n' Caesar wrap was vegan, I would've called it a damn good chicken Caesar wrap."
- Tyler's verdict on the wings: Not as good as the real thing, but the sauces — especially the vegan ranch — delivered.
Zoom in: Slutty Vegan says construction is underway on its new Corktown restaurant, at 1441 W. Elizabeth St., but hasn't announced an opening date.
The bottom line: It's basically an edgier Shake Shack with a lot more vulgarity and no meat.
