RenCen plan puts public funding in focus

Detroiters get their clearest look yet Tuesday at the public money being sought for the $1.6 billion-plus Renaissance Center redevelopment.

Why it matters: The size of the taxpayer contribution has been one of residents' biggest unanswered questions since the city's community benefits process began last month.

Driving the news: General Motors and Bedrock, which are pitching the redevelopment plan, are expected to detail the project's proposed tax breaks and other public support at Tuesday's community benefits meeting.

By the numbers: Bedrock plans to contribute about $1 billion and GM $250 million toward the project.

The Downtown Development Authority has authorized up to $75 million for public portions of the project.
Bedrock now expects to seek another $150 million-$175 million through Michigan's Transformational Brownfield program, per the Detroit News.

State of play: The nine-member Neighborhood Advisory Council filled its final seats after community representatives Teron Haynes Jr. and Gail Perry-Mason were elected two weeks ago .

City Council appointments: Renata Miller selected Aloshia Jackson; Coleman A. Young II selected Jamaine Dickens; and Mary Waters selected Linda Middlebrooks-Talbot.
Planning Department appointments: Catherine Cheung, Deirdre Jackson, Jeff Mastej and Bernard Morgan II.

What's next: The meeting starts at 6pm Tuesday at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, 2 Woodward Ave.
