Trade fight splits Gordie Howe bridge celebrations

Canada will hold its own celebration of the Gordie Howe International Bridge on Friday, days before the long-awaited Detroit-Windsor crossing opens to traffic.

Why it matters: The event highlights rising U.S.-Canada trade tensions amid the opening of one of North America's biggest infrastructure projects.

The latest: The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority will host a "Canadian Celebration" on Friday morning at the Canadian port of entry in Windsor.

Canada's Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson is expected to attend.

Driving the news: A joint U.S.-Canada celebration was canceled after the Trump administration this week announced additional tariffs on certain Canadian goods, the Detroit News reported.

What's next: The bridge is expected to open to traffic Monday despite the diplomatic fallout.
