HUD secretary meets with Detroit mayor-elect, tours downtown

HUD Secretary Scott Turner toured Hudson's Detroit and met with Mayor-elect Mary Sheffield during a Thursday visit to the city.
Why it matters: HUD plays an important role in Detroit through its community development grant programs, housing policies and other services for low- and moderate-income households.
Driving the news: Bedrock CEO Jared Fleisher and others showed Turner around the new Hudson's development on Woodward Avenue while describing the site's history and its significance to downtown revitalization.
The intrigue: Fleisher also detailed plans from Bedrock and General Motors to redevelop the Renaissance Center. The project is awaiting action from state lawmakers on an extension of the Transformational Brownfield program.
What they're saying: Detroit has the right leaders in place to revitalize the riverfront, Turner said, but pushing for the RenCen's redevelopment is not something the Trump administration would do.
- "The federal government is not the answer," Turner told reporters after the tour. "The solutions are local."
- Of meeting with Sheffield, Turner said: "I think she has a great vision … she's a pioneer of sorts, and so we look forward to working with her for the people of Detroit."
