Real ID deadline is coming, but it may not be urgent

While some people will need a Real ID starting May 7, the deadline isn't pressing for everyone.

Why it matters: The deadline's approach is causing panic in some states, with long lines at Secretary of State offices and DMVs.

The latest: As of Monday, Secretary of State locations in and near Detroit were booking appointments around four days to a week out.

Reality check: You only need a Real ID before May 7 if you're over 18, flying domestically soon and don't have a passport, or if you have to enter a military base or a secure federal building.

Otherwise, getting it after that date is not a problem. Those who don't have an immediate need can stand down.

The big picture: A Real ID is a state-issued driver's license or identification card that meets federal security standards.

In Michigan, compliant IDs are marked with a star in a gold circle or in an outline of the state.

By the numbers: As of Friday, about 75% of Michigan license or ID holders were RealID compliant, per a Secretary of State spokesperson.
